A neighbor planning to meet friends at CreekWalk for "the Halloween thing" on the first Saturday of October might expect a family scene with candy and costumes. What they'd find is a touring vendor market called Halloween Towne Night Market, set up in the same plaza where the Downtown Vacaville farmers market runs every Saturday morning. The free trick-or-treat stroll with a scarecrow contest is scheduled for Halloween itself, and it's not even in the same spot.
That mix-up is easy to have in Vacaville this time of year, because the city doesn't run one Halloween calendar. It runs three, organized separately by three groups, and two of those calendars happen to use the same word for two different places.
The three calendars, named
Halloween Towne Night Market kicks things off on Saturday, October 3, starting at 5 p.m. It's a touring vendor market, the kind that sets up in different cities on different weekends, and this stop lands at CreekWalk Plaza inside Andrews Park. This is a single-date stop on that touring schedule.
Downtown Vacaville's own lineup is separate and runs later in the month. The Downtown Vacaville Business Improvement District hosts Market by Moonlight on Saturday, October 10, from 5 to 9 p.m. in Town Square, an evening pop-up market the district is growing toward more than 200 vendors. Then comes the Boo Bash on Friday, October 30, from 5 to 10 p.m., back at CreekWalk Plaza. This one is 21 and over, ticketed at $50 a person with two drink tokens included, presented by Downtown Vacaville with Vacaville Mitsubishi as the sponsor and DJ Rene Ortiz running the music, same DJ who also emcees Market by Moonlight. Finally, on Halloween itself, Downtown Vacaville runs a free family trick-or-treat stroll along Merchant, Main, and Parker Streets, with music in Town Square and a scarecrow contest.
Nut Tree Plaza runs its own event entirely apart from downtown. Its Halloween Festival is set for Saturday, October 24, from noon to 3 p.m., and it's built for families: balloon twister, arts and crafts, a DJ, a bounce house, face painting, raffles. Nut Tree Plaza sits a few minutes' drive from the downtown core, also along East Monte Vista Avenue, but it isn't affiliated with the Downtown Vacaville BID and doesn't appear on the district's own event page.
Here's how the five events line up against each other:
| Event | Date | Time | Location | Audience | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Halloween Towne Night Market | Sat, Oct 3 | 5 p.m. onward | CreekWalk Plaza, Andrews Park | All ages, vendor market | Free |
| Market by Moonlight | Sat, Oct 10 | 5-9 p.m. | Town Square | All ages, night market | Free |
| Boo Bash | Fri, Oct 30 | 5-10 p.m. | CreekWalk Plaza, Andrews Park | 21 and over | $50 |
| Trick-or-Treat Stroll | Sat, Oct 31 | Afternoon/evening | Merchant, Main & Parker Streets | Families | Free |
| Nut Tree Halloween Festival | Sat, Oct 24 | 12-3 p.m. | Nut Tree Plaza | Families | Free |
Why CreekWalk shows up twice
CreekWalk Plaza isn't a Halloween venue. It's the physical space inside Andrews Park where Downtown Vacaville has run its year-round Saturday farmers market since long before this fall, open 8 a.m. to noon every week. That regular use is exactly why an outside touring market can book the same footprint for a single Saturday in October without any connection to the group that runs the plaza the rest of the year. Halloween Towne Night Market rents the space for one date. Downtown Vacaville uses the same space later that month for an event it actually organizes and promotes as part of its own calendar. Same location, same general "CreekWalk" name attached to both listings on event sites, two completely unrelated organizers.
It's a pattern worth knowing if you're trying to figure out which flyer or Facebook post is describing which event. The safest way to check is which name is doing the organizing: if it's Downtown Vacaville itself, you're looking at Market by Moonlight, the Boo Bash, or the trick-or-treat stroll. If it's an event page you don't recognize with "Halloween Towne" in the title, that's the touring market, and its Vacaville stop is scheduled for the first Saturday of the month.
The event that's easiest to miss
Of the five dates on the list, the trick-or-treat stroll on Halloween itself is the one most likely to slip past someone's radar. It doesn't carry a ticket price, so it doesn't show up prominently on Eventbrite the way the Boo Bash does. It isn't billed as a "market," so it doesn't get lumped in with the vendor-heavy listings that dominate search results for Vacaville Halloween events. It's simply a free, family walk down Merchant, Main, and Parker Streets, timed for Halloween afternoon and evening, with music in Town Square and a scarecrow contest running alongside it. If you're looking for the version of Halloween that doesn't require a ticket or a 21-and-over ID, this is the one, and it's worth putting directly on the calendar rather than counting on stumbling into it.
Town Square itself has picked up a small piece of permanent decoration worth knowing about if you're walking through with kids this fall. Outside the Vacaville Town Square Library sits a bronze sculpture called The Storyteller, showing children gathered around as a story comes to life, created by sculptor Edward E. Hlavka as edition 2 of only 24. It's not tied to any single event, but it sits right along the route of both Market by Moonlight and the trick-or-treat stroll, and it's the kind of detail that turns a walk downtown into more than just a straight line from one vendor booth to the next.
Nut Tree runs on its own track completely
If your plans involve Nut Tree Plaza rather than downtown, none of the CreekWalk overlap applies to you. The Nut Tree Halloween Festival on October 24 is organized by the plaza itself, not by the Downtown Vacaville BID, and it doesn't compete for the same date as any of the downtown events. It also isn't the same event as the "Fall Fun Festival" name that shows up on some older versions of Nut Tree's own event pages. Two different event names have been used for events at the plaza this season, but the consistent detail across Nut Tree's own listings and Visit Vacaville's event directory is a single confirmed date: October 24, noon to 3 p.m. If you're deciding between Nut Tree and downtown for a family outing, the practical difference is distance and parking lot, not competing schedules. Nothing forces a choice between the two.
Matching the date to what you actually want
If you want free and family-friendly with a market feel, Market by Moonlight on October 10 or the Nut Tree Halloween Festival on October 24 both fit, and they're two weeks apart so there's no need to pick one over the other. If you want the free, walkable, costume-and-candy version of Halloween itself, the trick-or-treat stroll on October 31 along Merchant, Main, and Parker is built for exactly that. If you're 21 or older and looking for a ticketed night out with music and drinks, the Boo Bash on October 30 is the one to register for in advance, since it requires a ticket purchase rather than just showing up. And if a flyer mentions "Halloween Towne," recognize that as the touring market scheduled for October 3, not a recurring fixture on Vacaville's own calendar.
None of these calendars are wrong for existing independently of each other. Downtown Vacaville, Nut Tree Plaza, and the touring market operator are simply three different organizations making separate decisions about how to use October, and a small city with more than one commercial district is always going to produce more than one version of the same season. Knowing which name belongs to which organizer is the difference between showing up on the right Saturday and standing in the wrong plaza wondering where everyone went.
